Use a branded domain, not a shared public shortener

Use a dedicated branded link domain—not a shared public shortener—for business SMS. Branded links for SMS make the destination visibly connected to the sender, reduce exposure to shared-shortener reputation issues, and give teams more control over redirects and measurement. They do not guarantee inboxing or replace consent, registration, or content discipline. For a US program, they are the more defensible operating standard.

The distinction matters because recipients, carriers, and messaging platforms all have reason to be cautious about opaque links. The Federal Trade Commission warns consumers that scammers use text-message links to reach spoofed sites or obtain information. Meanwhile, CTIA guidance says a sender using a shortener should use a web address and IP address dedicated exclusively to that sender, and that both the message URL and its redirect destination should clearly identify the website owner and include contact information. Branded short domains and public shorteners are not equivalent

A branded short link uses a domain or subdomain your business controls, such as go.northstar.com/offer7. A public short link uses a shared service domain, such as bit.ly/offer7. Both can shorten a long URL, but the governance model is fundamentally different: one is visibly associated with your business and one shares a namespace with unrelated senders.

Twilio’s US guidance says a shortened URL should be proprietary—a dedicated custom domain belonging to the business—and properly branded to align with the sender named in the message. It specifically warns that shared public shorteners raise filtering risk because of their frequent use by bad actors. [3] That does not mean every public link will be blocked or every branded link will deliver. It means the branded option gives your program a clearer identity and fewer avoidable variables.

Legal consent and opt-out duties are not solved by a branded link. FCC consumer guidance states that commercial robotexts require written consent and that consumers may opt out of robotexts in a reasonable manner. The current FCC rule also recognizes common reply words such as STOP, QUIT, END, REVOKE, OPT OUT, CANCEL, and UNSUBSCRIBE as reasonable revocations, with covered requests honored within a reasonable time not exceeding ten business days. [5] [6] Use a link domain as a trust and deliverability control, not as evidence of permission.

Carrier and platform requirements are a separate layer. CTIA states that shorteners should use a web address and IP address dedicated exclusively to the message sender. T-Mobile’s messaging code says public URL shorteners in bulk messaging are highly discouraged and messages containing them may be blocked; it also prohibits using multiple fully qualified domains or public shorteners to evade filters or dilute reputation metrics. Recipients cannot inspect a text link the way they can inspect a desktop browser address bar. The visible domain is therefore a quick identity signal. A message from “Northstar Outfitters” that links to go.northstar.com is easier to reconcile than the same message linking to a generic short domain. That consistency does not create trust by itself, but it removes an obvious mismatch that can suppress clicks, prompt complaints, or invite manual scrutiny.

For carrier filtering, avoid simplistic claims about a single trigger. Carriers and providers do not publish a complete filtering formula, and a compliant-looking domain cannot compensate for unwanted volume, misleading copy, weak consent, or a poor complaint profile. Shared reputation is the practical concern with public domains. Your team cannot control the other organizations that use a public shortener, their traffic quality, or how receiving networks assess that shared domain. A dedicated domain does not give you a blank reputation slate or immunity from filtering; it gives you accountability. Choose a domain that is short enough for SMS but unmistakably associated with the business. A familiar subdomain such as go.northstar.com is often easier for customers to recognize than an invented lookalike domain. Before launch, make ownership, DNS, certificate management, redirects, and campaign documentation part of one implementation checklist.

  1. Choose the domain owner and naming standard. Assign the domain to the legal business or brand shown in the text, document who can change DNS and redirects, and reserve it for this purpose rather than lending it to unrelated brands.
  2. Verify ownership with the link provider. Provider requirements vary. For example, Twilio requires a domain or subdomain used only for its Link Shortening feature and verification through a DNS change or an HTML file. [4]
  3. Configure DNS deliberately. Twilio recommends a CNAME for a subdomain and explains that root-domain setups may need CNAME flattening, ALIAS, or ANAME support. Allow propagation time and record the final configuration. [4]
  4. Enable HTTPS before sending traffic. A link-shortening provider may serve redirects for your domain, so validate the TLS certificate, renewal method, and browser experience. Twilio says its redirects are served over HTTPS and offers managed or bring-your-own certificate options. [4]
  5. Associate the domain with the right messaging service and documented campaign. For 10DLC workflows, provider registration guidance expects sample messages that reflect the campaign, clearly identify the sender, use a real functional business website when a link is included, and show an opt-out mechanism.   6. Test the entire recipient journey. Send a controlled message to multiple devices and carriers, confirm the displayed short link, inspect the HTTPS redirect, load the final page, test STOP, and confirm that analytics distinguish human clicks from previews where your platform supports it.

Keep the sending number, brand record, campaign description, opt-in disclosure, and link domain in the same operating inventory. If the business changes names, moves domains, or acquires a brand, review the message program before simply swapping URLs. That discipline supports the campaign consistency expected in an A2P 10DLC registration plan.

Design redirects and landing pages for recognition, not concealment

A short link should take the recipient through a simple, predictable path: branded SMS domain, one controlled redirect, then the canonical landing page. Do not use the short domain to mask a different business, an unexpected affiliate, a login trap, or an unrelated destination. CTIA says both the URL in the message and the website to which it redirects should unambiguously identify the website owner and include contact information. [1]

Minimize redirect chains. Each extra hop creates another point of failure, can slow the page, makes troubleshooting harder, and gives the customer fewer reasons to trust the journey. Preserve campaign parameters only where they are needed, avoid putting sensitive information in the URL, and set a safe fallback page for expired or retired links. If a promotion is over, a branded “offer ended” page is usually better than an error or a silent redirect to an unrelated page.

Use SMS click tracking without confusing activity for intent

Branded link infrastructure can improve measurement because it makes each URL attributable to a campaign, audience, and destination. Twilio’s link-shortening feature creates unique shortened links, redirects them to the original URL, and can send click-event data that includes the original link, recipient, time, user agent, and whether the event was a click or a device-generated preview. That data is useful for diagnosing creative, segment, or landing-page performance, but a click is not automatically a customer decision. Treat previews separately, reconcile click events with web analytics and conversion events, and establish access and retention rules before exporting data into a CRM. Under Twilio’s current product behavior, the short-link association lasts 90 days and click events are constrained by the account’s messaging-record retention period. Use tags that describe the campaign rather than the individual when possible, and avoid exposing email addresses, phone numbers, order data, or authentication tokens in a query string. The goal is actionable SMS engagement segmentation, not an overbuilt tracking layer that creates unnecessary security or privacy exposure.

Consistency is the decision rule. The name in the copy, the sending program, the short domain, the landing-page logo, and the support contact should all point to the same business. This makes a legitimate promotional text easier to recognize and easier for an internal team to defend during troubleshooting or campaign review.

Stronger: “Northstar Outfitters: Members save 20% on trail layers through Sunday. Shop: go.northstar.com/fall20. Reply STOP to opt out.” The sender, domain, offer, and opt-out are coherent. Weaker: “Big savings today! bit.ly/4xQ.” Even with valid consent, the second version gives a recipient little basis to identify the sender or destination.

Apply the same standard to transactional messages. An order update that suddenly uses a promotional lookalike link can confuse customers just as much as an unbranded marketing link. Maintain approved templates, review destination changes, and use an SMS campaign checklist before each material launch.

A practical decision and migration plan

If you send recurring, promotional, lifecycle, ecommerce, or account-related business SMS in the United States, move away from shared public shorteners. Do not wait for an isolated filtering event to establish ownership and governance. A dedicated branded domain is the right default when links are part of a persistent customer program.

  • Inventory every SMS template, automation, vendor integration, and deep link that currently creates or rewrites URLs.
  • Select one recognizable domain per customer-facing brand and confirm that its ownership, DNS, HTTPS, and redirects can be managed by accountable teams.
  • Map each link domain to the sender identity and campaign record; update sample messages and public-facing opt-in materials when program facts change.
  • Run a staged rollout with internal recipients, device and carrier checks, redirect monitoring, and a measured comparison of delivery, clicks, complaints, and conversions.
  • Retire public short links from active templates. Keep a documented redirect or helpful end page for old links until it is safe to sunset them.

The commercial benefit is not a magic delivery rate. It is a cleaner, more controllable system: recipients can recognize where a link leads, teams can measure the journey, and operators can manage one durable domain rather than chase one-off URLs.
